When you volunteer with Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity, you become an integral part of someone's life. Stable housing is the foundation for a healthy life. Volunteering empowers people to become successful homeowners and vital members of the community. No construction skills are needed! We give you a "doable" task and help you have fun learning on the job!
Volunteer Opportunities
The ReStore
Volunteers are the heartbeat of the Salt Lake ReStore, helping clean, organize, and arrange the many items donated daily.
Corporate Builds
Sponsor a Habitat home with a powerful team-building day!
Corporate Build Days are a great way to help Habitat build a home, financially and physically, while giving back to the community. Your team of 15 associates will spend six hours on a home-building site, learning new skills or putting their knowledge to work in a meaningful way. Participants frequently tell us their biggest benefits from the experience were building a stronger team and improving communication. While on the build site, volunteers must take and follow instructions, figure things out, cooperate, collaborate, and overcome challenges. They can put newly learned skills to use in their own homes.
We promote Corporate Days on our social media to share the good news. Corporate Day sponsorships are $3,000 for a 15-person team and include lunch and a T-shirt. To learn more and begin the scheduling process, please complete our online inquiry form.
A Brush with Kindness
Helping homeowners tackle tough exterior projects
Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity's Brush with Kindness is a volunteer-based program that helps low-income homeowners who, because of age, disability, and family circumstances, are unable to address maintenance and repair issues. Homeowners in Salt Lake, Tooele, and Davis Counties are eligible to apply.
Sponsoring a Brush with Kindness project is a great way to give back to the community while enjoying a fun and engaging day of team building. Participants frequently tell us their team members bonded in a new way, improving communication and collaboration. While on the program site, volunteers must figure out the best way to tackle tasks, honing their cooperation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Volunteers often learn new tricks to help them maintain their own homes.
Brush with Kindness sponsorships are $3,000 to $5,000 per day for up to 15 people. Lunch and a T-shirt are included. You don't need any tools or special knowledge. We provide everything and can accommodate people of all abilities.

Group and Individual Builds
Help us build our next home!
When people think of Habitat for Humanity, they picture people building homes. We offer volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups on our Salt Lake area Habitat build sites. Currently, we are working on the Field of Dreams. As a build day volunteer, you will spend six hours learning new skills or putting your knowledge to work in a meaningful way. Skilled tradespeople are welcome; however, no special knowledge or skills are required. We provide instruction, tools, and supervision to ensure you have a fun and rewarding experience. You may learn a few tricks of the trade to put to use in your own home!
People age 16 and up can volunteer at a build site (parents must accompany minors and sign a waiver). We do our best to accommodate people of all abilities. Detailed volunteer instructions will be provided when you sign up.

Global Village Builds
Habitat may work around the corner from you, but we also work around the world. Through Habitat’s Global Village program, you’ll expand the breadth and depth of your understanding of Habitat’s work while experiencing the culture and everyday life of another country. Our volunteer trips offer more than just the opportunity to swing a hammer. When you travel and volunteer with Global Village, you’ll experience the country like a local, with the locals. Meet people from around the world with all different kinds of backgrounds, races, and religions.
Spending time with other cultures gives us the opportunity to discover our commonalities. You’ll find that you don’t even need to speak the language.
The Global Village program took a hiatus during the pandemic and is slowly resuming region by region, with a focus on maintaining the health and safety of our staff, volunteers, partners, and the people we serve. Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity will announce our next Global Village opportunity in our newsletter and on social media, so stay tuned! (Sign up for our newsletter below)
Our past trims include Nepal, India and Guatemala.

Special Projects and Events
Youth Volunteers
Families building memories!
Home Building
Volunteering on a Habitat build site is a great opportunity for some quality parent-teen bonding time. Our site supervisor will give you age-appropriate projects that develop valuable skills. Your child will gain first-hand experience in the construction industry, which may provide insights into rewarding and lucrative career opportunities. But most importantly, you'll create fond memories that will last a lifetime.
Youth groups are encouraged to participate as long as each youth is accompanied by their parent/guardian. Volunteering on the job is an amazing team-building experience where everyone has to learn, coordinate, problem-solve, and work together to get the job done. Shifts last six hours, from 9 am to 3 pm, and are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
To volunteer on a home build site, youth must be at least 16 years old and accompanied by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s).
ReStore
Volunteering at the ReStore introduces teens to the retail and building materials industries, both of which offer a variety of career paths, including entrepreneurship. With a flexible 3-hour shift, and a minimum age of 13, the ReStore is a great option for families on the go.
Donation Drives
Children of all ages can participate in donation drives. Nothing is more heartwarming than having a child come to our office and hand over a jar of coins and bills they collected from their neighbors. Their efforts mean more to us than words can express. Lemonade stands, bake sales, and helping neighbors with miscellaneous chores are other ways children can raise money for Habitat.
Faith Build
Bringing people of all faiths together in service.
Habitat for Humanity International was built on a foundation of faith, with a mission to build safe, affordable housing with (not for) people in the United States and around the world. Faith Build Week is an annual event specifically designed to engage and unite churches, congregations, and faith members of our community by putting faith in action through service and support.
The tangible experiences that Habitat provides allow you to engage your faith community and work alongside volunteers and Habitat families of all faiths. No experience is necessary to volunteer, and all faith groups are welcome. We will teach you everything you need to know on the build site, and there are a variety of tasks, indoors and outdoors, that require all levels of skill and ability. We also can offer tailored experiences to fit your group, such as a focus for students, singles, or small groups.
We share information about Faith Build Week in our newsletter. Sign up below.
Pride Build
Pride Build Week demonstrates our commitment to inclusivity.
During Pride Month, we host a week of building and community spirit. We also accept Pride volunteer groups throughout the year. Whether you're a seasoned builder or a first-time volunteer, your help is welcome and appreciated.
In 2024, Pride Build put finishing touches on our Field of Dreams community in Kearns.
No experience is necessary – we teach you everything you'll need to know to complete your tasks. Pride Build Week is a fabulous way to involve your friends and family in doing work with a lasting impact. And, if you participate on your own, don’t worry – you’ll make plenty of new friends in a welcoming and fun atmosphere.

Veteran Build
Honoring the brave men and women who served our country and our people.
Habitat for Humanity loves our veterans! Habitat for Humanity International's Veterans Build initiative provides volunteer, homeownership, and employment opportunities to U.S. veterans, military service members, and their families. Locally, we honor our veterans in a variety of ways.
Veteran Build Week
Each November, Habitat Salt Lake hosts a Veteran Build Week to pay tribute to veterans, raise awareness about veteran issues, and mobilize veteran volunteers. Details about this year's event will be posted closer to the event. Read about the 2023 Veteran Build here.
Facts About Veterans
The National Low Income Housing Coalition finds that 2.5 million veterans heading households are at least 55 years of age. Of those 2.5 million veterans, 24% have housing cost burdens. Unlike older civilians, our older veterans are more likely to have a disability — 35% versus 28% — which may require home modifications, specialized health needs, and other supportive services as they age.
Our female veteran population is also in need. According to a report by the National Housing Conference, nearly half of our veterans who are single mothers spend more than 30% of their income on housing. Our female veterans face significant economic and housing challenges and are particularly vulnerable to housing cost burdens compared with our overall veteran population.
Our veterans who served following 9/11 have returned to a slow-growing economy and rising housing costs. These economic factors have made the transition from military service to civilian life difficult for many of our veterans. In addition, nearly 4 million of our veterans pay at least 30% of their income toward rent or mortgage, while more than 1.5 million pay at least 50%. As you can imagine, using half of your income to pay your rent or mortgage is an enormous strain on any budget.
Local Veterans Initiatives
Homeownership
Safe, decent, and affordable housing is the centerpiece of the Veteran Build initiative. In many communities, we are expanding programs to maintain and preserve homes and make them more energy-efficient and affordable. Learn more about home ownership opportunities here.
Critical Home Repairs
In partnership with The Home Depot Foundation, Habitat for Humanity International developed the Repair Corps program to offer critical home repairs to military veteran homeowners. Our Critical Home Repair Program (CHiRP) is available to veterans with low to moderate incomes. Learn more and review the eligibility requirements here.
Employment
We value skill sets gained from your military service. We recruit veterans to work at Habitat as employees, board members, and AmeriCorps members. Check here to see job openings.
Volunteer engagement
We provide volunteer experiences that bring together veterans, military families, and their neighbors. These experiences help bridge the gap and ease the transition to civilian life with fulfilling community engagement.
Photography
We can always use the help of amateur and professional photographers to capture the fun during our construction and ReStore volunteer projects and our special events.
