Frequently Asked Questions
Does Habitat for Humanity give away houses?
No. Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Salt Lake Area is a "hand up, not a hand out." Partner families buy their homes through affordable, no-interest or low-interest mortgages. Our homes are built to be simple, decent, and affordable for hardworking families in our community.
Who carries the mortgage on the homes?
Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Salt Lake Area typically originates and services the mortgage loans for our partner families, ensuring monthly payments remain affordable (usually not exceeding 30% of the household's monthly income).
Who builds Habitat homes?
Our homes are a true community effort. Professional contractors handle specialized tasks, but the majority of construction is completed by volunteers. Partner families are required to complete 225 hours of sweat equity, working on their own home, other Habitat homes, or in our ReStore alongside volunteers.
Where does the affiliate get the money to build homes?
Funding comes from a variety of sources: individual donations, corporate sponsorships, faith groups, and grants. We also advocate at federal and state levels for vital resources like HOME Investment Partnerships and CDBG funds. Additionally, proceeds from our ReStore help build more homes in our community.
What is Habitat doing for local housing advocacy?
We are highly active in housing policy. In 2026, our team met with Utah legislators to advocate for the Olene Walker Housing Loan Fund and the ROAD Housing Act. We also partner on local initiatives like the Fleet Block redevelopment to ensure affordable homeownership remains a reality in Salt Lake City.
ReStore - A Home Improvement Thrift Store & Donation Center
Does the ReStore buy its inventory?
No. The ReStore stocks its shelves with donated new and gently used building materials, furniture, and home improvement items from individuals and corporate donors.
Who can shop at the ReStore?
Everyone! The ReStore is open to the public. It provides an opportunity for all community members to purchase high-quality items at a fraction of retail cost, while keeping usable materials out of local landfills.
How can I donate to the ReStore?
Donations can be dropped off during business hours or you can schedule a pick-up for larger items. Learn more about our donation guidelines here.
What items does the ReStore accept?
We accept household items and building materials in good, resaleable condition. To maintain our standards for quality, we cannot accept items that are broken, stained, or significantly damaged. Please check our current "Accepted Items" list before dropping off.
Volunteer Program
Are there age restrictions to volunteer?
Yes. For safety reasons, construction site volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. ReStore volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. All volunteers under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.
What is the volunteer work schedule?
Build Sites: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Volunteers are required to work the full 6-hour shift.
ReStore: Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. We request that ReStore volunteers commit to a minimum of 3 hours per shift.
Do I need special skills or tools to volunteer?
No prior experience is necessary! We welcome all skill levels and provide all the necessary tools and safety equipment. A trained site supervisor or staff member will be present to provide instruction and oversight throughout your shift.
Do you build in bad weather?
We build year-round, rain or shine. If conditions become unsafe, the site supervisor will make a call on-site. Please dress appropriately for the Utah weather (layers are recommended) and always wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
Corporate & Group Build Events
What are the benefits of a Corporate Build Day?
Corporate Build Days offer unique team-building opportunities while directly impacting the local housing crisis. Your financial sponsorship covers the cost of materials and professional supervision for the day, allowing your team to see the tangible results of their contribution.
How many people can we bring?
Construction groups are typically limited to 15 people per day to ensure safety and quality instruction. The ReStore can accommodate larger groups of up to 30 people. For very large organizations, we can schedule multiple days to accommodate your entire team.
When is our sponsorship donation due?
We ask that sponsorship funds be processed or in route by your scheduled build date. These funds are vital for purchasing the materials your team will be using on-site that day.
What is the dress code for groups?
Safety is our priority. All volunteers must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes (boots or heavy sneakers are best). We recommend clothes you don't mind getting dirty or paint-stained, and dressing in layers to stay comfortable
