Our Mission
Seeking to put love into action, Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Salt Lake Area brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
Our Vision
A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Our Guiding Principles
- Demonstrate love for humankind.
- Focus on shelter.
- Advocate for affordable housing.
- Promote dignity and hope.
- Support sustainable and transformative development.
Our Work
Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Salt Lake Area carries out our mission through a permanent framework of service: building affordable homes, providing critical home repairs, offering low-cost materials through our ReStore, and advocating for policies that increase housing supply and equitable access to credit. We invite people of all backgrounds, races, religions, and abilities to build in partnership with families in need.
Our History
Serving the Greater Salt Lake and Davis County areas since 1986.
For 40 years, Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Salt Lake Area has provided affordable homeownership to 132 families, housing over 420 people, including 285 children. Our zero-interest or low-interest mortgages ensure that the cost of homeownership remains significantly lower than local market rents. This stability allows families to build community and fosters long-term success. Habitat homeowners "pay it forward" as their monthly mortgage payments are reinvested into the Fund for Humanity to build homes for future neighbors.
In 2009, we opened the Salt Lake ReStore, a premier home improvement thrift store. By accepting donations of surplus building materials and household goods from retailers and individuals, the ReStore sustains our operations and funds new construction. Annually, the ReStore diverts over 600 tons of reusable material from local landfills.
In 2012, we established the Critical Home Repair Program (CHiRP). To date, CHiRP has improved the health and safety of more than 1,200 residents along the Wasatch Front by addressing sub-standard housing conditions.
Habitat for Humanity International
We are an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a global nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles. Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat was born from the vision of "partnership housing," where those in need of shelter work alongside volunteers to build simple, decent homes at no profit. Today, Habitat has helped more than 59 million people improve their living conditions in over 70 countries.
Non-proselytizing Policy
Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Salt Lake Area will not proselytize or work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their involvement with Habitat. We do not offer assistance on the condition that people must adhere to or convert to a particular faith, nor do we require anyone to listen to messaging designed to induce conversion. Our doors are open to all who want to help build a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
