Building Stability, Strength, and Financial Resilience
Application Process & Selection
Families are selected through a thoughtful and transparent process focused on three core principles:
• A demonstrated need for improved housing
• The ability to pay an affordable mortgage
• A willingness to partner with Habitat
The application process begins with a mandatory in-person information session where candidates receive an application, followed by documentation review and verification, and a home visit.
Final selections are made by Habitat’s Family Services Committee and Board of Directors. The application process can take anywhere from 6 to 8 months for those accepted into the program. Habitat determines the number of families accepted at a time based on how many homes we expect to build in the next year. If an applicant is not accepted this round, they are always welcome to apply again next time.
Program Expectations
- Time & Commitment: Once selected, families are generally in the program for 8-12 months and required to complete 225 sweat equity hours (helping build homes, volunteering at the ReStore, homeowner education classes).
- Engagement: Partner families are expected to stay engaged by communicating openly, completing commitments, and attending all required education sessions to prepare for homeownership.
- Long-Term Partnership: Families receive education, guidance, and training, along with a safe, well-built home that they buy through a fair and affordable zero-percent interest mortgage.
